THE RACE

The Sani Pass TT is a pure Time Trial in the traditional sense but unique in every other way.

Starting at 1544m at the base of the Sani Pass in South Africa and climbing to 2877m at the Lesotho Border Post, riders will climb over 1300 vertical meters into the African sky.

Stretching 21km - the road to the top is 13km of tar to the South African Border Post, and then 8km of lung-busting gravel to the summit of the Pass.

Surrounded by the pristine environment of the Maloti Drakensberg World Heritage Site, riders will experience unparalleled vistas of the Southern Drakensberg, and air that thins with every pedal stroke.

The TT section is the 21km from the Base to the Summit, with the return trip being an untimed neutral zone that is safe and allows the riders to stop and enjoy the incredible views and suffering of those still heading upwards.

The Sani Pass TT will have 4 Race Categories with MTB, E-Bike, Gravel Bike and Single Speed options for riders, and the choice to ride Solo or as a Team of 2.
Riders will depart every 20 seconds off the start platform at Premier Resort Sani Pass, and their time will stop as their front wheel hits the timing mat at the summit.
For teams, the time will stop when the 2nd rider’s wheel hits the timing mat.
The return trip down the Pass will be an untimed neutral leg that emphasises safety.
Any rider who descends dangerously or puts other athletes at risk will be disqualified.
The inaugural Sani Pass TT will take place on Saturday 22nd November 2025, with the first riders going off at 07:00 and the last by 09:00.
Riders will be given their start time once entries close, and riders will be grouped into the 4 different categories.
Single Speeds will go off first, followed by Gravel Bikes, then Mountain Bikes and finally E-Bikes.
All riders are expected to be back in at the finish by 13:00.
Prize Giving will take place at 15:00 followed by a spit braai and after party for all entrants.
The race venue is the Premier Resort Sani Pass.
The start and finish will be on the Hotel grounds and the spit braai and after party will be hosted at the Hotel.
The event has blocked off a number of rooms at the Hotel and these will be available for booking 2 weeks after race entries open.
Registration will take place at Premier Resort Sani Pass from 14:00 – 19:00 on Friday the 21st, with a limited late registration available at the Resort from 06:00 – 06:30 on the Saturday morning.
All riders will be encouraged to ride the neutral leg back down the Pass to the finish, but there will be access to a limited number of 30 shuttle self-drive tickets that will allow a vehicle with bike rack to be taken to the top of the Pass ahead of the race start.
These 30 tickets will be available with race entries on a first come first serve basis.
The cost of a ticket will be R1000 per vehicle to encourage as many passengers as possible on the return leg back down the Pass to ease vehicle congestion.
A limited number of Tour Vehicles will also be available for booking as a return shuttle.
Riders who are willing to loan their bike rack to a tour vehicle will get their shuttle seat for free.
The driving of private vehicles up the Pass that do not have a shuttle ticket is strictly prohibited, as this will greatly diminish the rider’s experience and pose safety problems.
Any vehicle found on the Pass between 07:00 and 13:00 that has a rider in the race will unfortunately see that rider disqualified.
Entries will open at 09:00 on Wednesday 2 July 2025 on Racepass and/or via our website.
Due to the nature of the Pass entries will be limited.
Accommodation bookings for race weekend at the Premier Resort Sani Pass will open at 09:00 on Wednesday 16th July on Quicket.
All entered riders will be sent a code by 17:00 on 15th July that will give them access to the Accommodation Bookings. This is to ensure that the available rooms are secured by riders who have entered the race.
